Its still an awesome finale to a legendary series (pun intended) and the Chronicles in their own right easily deserve the title of fantasy classic. The Companions are back in this first volume, which features an untold story from the War of the Lance. Its epic, its romantic, its sad, its certainly action packed but like I mentioned above, its not of the same fantasy scale as book two was, and it lacks its much cherished OMG moments that was gifted to the reader back then.

So overall, i give SPRING DAWNING four stars out of five. This forms an interesting counterpoint to some of the relatively juvenile sections of text found in book one, which, if nothing else, indicates that our stunningly brilliant writers decided to change the tone of the trilogy for its finale. And the book is surprisnigly violent and gory, too, in particular as you approach the book’s second half. Stretched out over several breathtaking chapters, the reader is not sure of anything as plot twist followed plot twist, followed plot twist, so that made that part of the story an undisputed classic. Meaning, of course, that humans live (and die) with more passion than Elves do, due to their presumed shorter life spans. I also was impressed with the way Weiss and Hickman differentiated, in an existential sense, what it meant to live your life as an Elf, as opposed to a human. There has been plenty of emotion, though, with several members of the story’s principal cast being killed off and I must admit to being fascinated and entertained by the way Tanis has been dealing (or not) with the continued leadership of his ever-dwindling group. There has been little character development, other than (SPOILERS) who turn to the “dark side” of his talents, and even that massive turn of events happened off stage. Compared with the epic greatness of WINTER NIGHT, SPRING DAWNING hasnt gifted me with any real OMG moments that a great fantasy story should.

AS MUCH AS I HAVE ADORED reading and living every chapter of my trek through war-ravaged Krynn as set down in the first three volumes of the DRAGONLANCE CHRONICLES, I must confess to developing feelings of minor disappointment by story’s end.
